Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) Aftercare Tips for Your Clients

Scalp micro pigmentation or SMP is a medical procedure that uses cosmetic pigmentation. It helps cover up hair loss or any other scalp problem by introducing pigment to the skin. The result may not be a full head of hair, but your scalp will definitely look a lot more full and healthier!

If you are an SMP technician or you are aspiring to become one, then you most probably know how beneficial the procedure can be. Below, we will discuss a couple of things you might need to tell your clients after every session. You will most likely learn this at scalp pigmentation training, but we are discussing it with you today anyway.

Wait for Three Days

First of all, you should tell your client to wait at least three days before they decide to wet their head. You should also tell them not to touch or scratch their scalp during these three days, as the pigment might come off. Additionally, the client must also refrain from doing strenuous activities, as they must not sweat during this period. They should avoid exercising, sitting under the sun, or basically anything that will make them sweat. On the fourth day, they can finally wash their scalp, but only with water. They should avoid using soap or shampoo on the area, as this can disrupt the pigment. They can wash their scalp the way they'd normally should on the seventh day.

Avoid Exposure to Direct Sunlight

The sunlight can be too harsh on your client's scalp, and this can make the pigment fade easily. This is the reason why it is extremely important to tell your client to avoid exposing their scalp under direct sunlight, even if weeks or months have passed. Tell them that if they ever need to be exposed under the sun, then they should use protective gear such as an umbrella or a hat.

Avoid Certain Ingredients

You should also tell your client to avoid using products that have certain ingredients such as SD alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or denatured alcohol, as these can be extremely drying and can affect the pigments on your scalp. Instead, they should opt for herbal products or hair care products that contain mild and moisturizing ingredients.

Moisturize and Exfoliate

Give them a good scalp moisturizer and tell them to use it every single day. The scalp needs as much moisture that it can get, especially after the scalp micro pigmentation procedure. They can also remove dead skin cells by exfoliating their scalp once to twice a week. Tell them not to over-exfoliate though, as this can dry their scalp and their hair.

It is important to discuss all of these with your clients, as you want them to be satisfied with the results. You'll want them to be pleased with the outcome so they will come back for another session if need be. Give them a list of the aftercare tips that you have so they can take a look at it if they ever need to.
