What are the Best Times to Buy Holiday Gifts?

Thanksgiving season offers a lot of shopping deals, like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and many people take advantage of these days to shop for holiday gifts. But these sales can get pretty hectic and the deals may run out fast.

If you’re one of the unfortunate ones, there is no need to worry, because there are other times of the year to get holiday gifts for lower prices.

Early December

According to the coupon-centric site, Rather-Be-Shopping, many shops lower their prices by early December. On the first week of the month, jewelry retailers are likely to start reducing their prices, which may run for two weeks before going back to normal or increasing.

Meanwhile, prices of exercise equipment, TVs and laptops usually drop on the second week. By the third week of December, right before Christmas, stores usually offer discounts for a wide variety of products, especially toys, clothes and tools/hardware, and online shops typically have promotional events that guarantee free shipping and delivery until Christmas Eve.

Between Christmas and New Year

If you are willing to start shopping for holiday gifts really early (or a bit late), you may consider buying presents in the days following the holidays, particularly between Christmas and New Year. Once the holidays are over, stores tend to offer big discounts on their merchandise to make way for the new year’s inventory.

Most TVs, electronics, fitness equipment, cars, bedding and toys are likely to have the deepest discounts after the holidays as well. However, you may have to wait until September to November to get the best deals on phones, laptops and bigger appliances, when Apple announces new models and Black Friday sales start happening all over the country.

January clearance sales

The price drops from between Christmas and New Year are likely to continue until the old stocks are all sold out in January and early February. These products include big-ticket items like furniture and home decor, motorcycles, linens and bedding, and large appliances, such as refrigerators, stoves and ovens.

In January, you could also score great deals on products that are commonly used for gifts during the holidays, like calendars, greeting cards, wrapping paper, perfume, and toys.

Retailers are also clearing out stocks of swimwear, winter clothes, fall clothing, and outdoor gear around this time. So, if you have been waiting for a North Face shoes sale to buy winter and outdoor gear gifts, January might be the best time to grab them.

Bigger gifts in February

If you are looking for sales on even more big-ticket items, February could be the time for you. Boats, for one, may have lower prices in this month, as the winter leads up to spring and they become more in-demand. The Super Bowl season also happens around this time, so the best deals on home theaters and big-screen TVs are usually brought out in February.

For photographers or photography enthusiasts, cameras are typically cheaper this month as well. Most camera companies release new models in January and February, so you would find the best prices on older camera models around this time.

Even if the holidays are at the end of the year, it is best to plan your gifts early. This way, you can take advantage of any sale all-year round and not join the crowds of holiday shoppers when you buy your gifts on the last minute.
