Warehouse Supervisor
Being a warehouse supervisor means you must be somewhere between the management and clerical teams. Some of your competencies include:
- Understanding warehouse inventory control procedures and their application
- Supervising the flow of merchandise inside the warehouse, including picking, shipping, and receiving
- Improving warehouse operations by understanding supplier and customer logistics policies
- Communicating with employees, management, and fellow supervisors
In other words, you should understand how things work on the floor while ensuring that standard procedures are followed, information is clearly communicated, and conflicts are resolved.
The minimum educational requirement for a warehouse supervisor should be at least a high school graduate or GED certificate. However, some companies may require at least a bachelor’s degree. The average annual salary is $46,591.
Warehouse Manager
A warehouse manager should have the following competencies:
- Training and supervising staff
- Planning
- Communicating with customers and other departments
- Managing and maintaining budgets and financial records
- Running stock control

Sometimes, a manager may also be required to oversee mechanical and IT systems. The minimum education requirement for a warehouse manager does not have to be a bachelor’s degree, but experience in management and background in warehouses are often required. The average base salary is $81,303.
Warehouse Clerk
The warehouse clerk or operative is in charge of handling incoming and outgoing merchandise in the warehouse. His or her responsibilities include:
- Managing stock
- Loading and unloading items from delivery vehicles
- Storing merchandise in the designated area
- Checking merchandise for damages
- Preparing outgoing shipments
Some warehouse clerks may also be required to write reports, maintain the storage area, and put labels on the merchandise. Warehouse Selector
A warehouse selector has similar responsibilities to a clerk, but he or she is more focused on selecting, stacking, and sorting items in the facility. The selector directly communicates with the retailers or chain stores to ensure that the items from the warehouse reach them in the condition expected.
As a selector, you are also required to prepare the products for delivery by wrapping and labeling them. You may also be instructed to keep records of the inventory. The education requirement for a selector is the same as a clerk’s, but you may also undergo training if equipment and software are used in the warehouse. The average annual salary is $24,440.
